4 Myths About Tooth Extractions — Busted!

Unlike other dental services, tooth extractions in Orange Park don’t have the best reputation. After all, they’re meant to be a last resort — it’s only natural that people would spread hushed rumors. The truth, however, is that most of these stereotypes are false! Rather than a bogeyman, tooth extraction is simply one helpful way to improve oral health. Your local dentist even has evidence for these claims. Here are four busted myths about tooth extractions and why they’re untrue.

“Tooth Extraction is Always Painful”

The biggest myth about extraction is that it’s painful. Since an adult tooth is usually permanent, many assume removing one upsets various nerves. To avoid this supposed pain, some patients will even delay the procedure.

Fortunately, this idea isn’t true — the extraction process is painless! For starters, modern dentists use minimally invasive methods for it. Plus, they’ll use an anesthetic to numb your mouth before treatment. As a result, you won’t feel discomfort, just mild pressure.

“Recovery Takes a Long Time”

Another rumor states extraction involves a long recovery. It pulls out a normally-stable body part, so some believe the body needs more time to heal. As such, a patient will have to wait months to recuperate.

In reality, it only takes one or two weeks to recover from an extraction. Your body can quickly heal the treated socket in that time. So long as you follow the proper aftercare, then, you’ll be just fine.

“Dentists Only Extract Wisdom Teeth”

Based on hearsay, a few people claim that dentists only extract wisdom teeth. Therefore, there’s no reason to have any other tooth pulled.

Unfortunately, said claim is baseless. Dentists can and do extract non-wisdom teeth for various reasons. For example, your own may suggest removing a tooth damaged by decay or injury. On the other hand, they might need to pull one that struggles to erupt. Otherwise, it could become impacted and cause enormous pain. Extractions are also common before orthodontic work.

“Replacing an Extracted Tooth isn’t Necessary”

An extraction removes a decayed or infected tooth, so you may think your problem is gone when it wraps up. In this view, you don’t need to replace the now-missing tooth.

In fact, it’s a horrible idea not to replace your pearly white. Without a dental prosthetic, your mouth’s smile gap will shift your other teeth. This shifting, in turn, could lead to a crooked smile and a misaligned bite. The empty socket would also cause bone loss in your jaw.

Ultimately, tooth extractions in Orange Park don’t deserve their bad rap. That being the case, talk to your dental practice about getting one if the need arises.
