Protect Your Smile By Getting High-Quality Preventive Treatment

Patients often wonder why it’s necessary to visit their dentist every six months when they’re diligent about brushing and flossing at home. There are nooks and crannies in your mouth that you can’t reach with a regular toothbrush. Plus, Drs. Crovatto and Edwards are specially trained to spot early signs of diseases that can wreak havoc, like periodontitis and oral cancer. To get a clean bill of health and feel confident that your teeth and gums are in great shape, routine check-ups and cleanings are an absolute must. At Crovatto & Edwards Family Dentistry, we focus on providing our patients with the highest quality of preventive treatments so you don’t have to worry about severe issues developing down the road.

Why is Routine Preventive Care Important?

Preventive treatment helps our patients enjoy a healthy and beautiful smile for decades to come. Most people wonder why it’s necessary, and what benefits it has to offer your mouth. While brushing and flossing every day at home is a great way to keep your mouth healthy, semi-annual check-ups, cleanings, and treatments like cavity fillings keep the small problems from turning into more severe issues.

Hygiene tools like soft-bristled toothbrushes, fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, and dental floss can clean the easy-to-reach surfaces of your teeth and gums without a problem. However, they’re not capable of getting the small crevices that easily trap food particles and plaque, causing the development of cavities, decay, and infection. Drs. Crovatto and Edwards are equipped with specially crafted gadgets like dental mirrors, scalers, and intraoral cameras so they can get an up-close view of every inch of your mouth as well as maximum access.

People often put off routine dental care because most common oral health problems are easy to dismiss when they first begin developing. Some don’t even show symptoms until they’ve become severe and threaten the health of your teeth and gums. Dental check-ups give our professionals a chance to make sure that every problem, even the smallest ones, have been addressed and treated.

What Happens During a Dental Check-Up and Cleaning?

Routine appointments with your dentist are recommended every six months to stay on top of your oral health. When you first get to our office, we’ll have you fill out any necessary paperwork and bring you back to our comfortable treatment room. If necessary, we’ll take X-rays of your mouth so we can find any issues that may be hidden under the surface. Drs. Crovatto or Edwards will then examine the health of your teeth, gums, and oral tissues by searching for any abnormalities or symptoms.

After your check-up has been completed and you’ve received any treatment for oral health problems we found, we’ll begin your dental cleaning. This typically takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. We’ll use a scaler to clear all tartar and plaque from the surface of your teeth. After that, we’ll floss between each of your pearly whites to remove food debris buildup. Finally, we’ll polish them using a gritty prophylaxis paste to remove surface stains.

The best way to avoid dealing with the hassle of oral health problems like cavities, gum disease, and infection is to visit our office for your semi-annual appointments. Our team of dental professionals can stop these problems from wreaking havoc on your oral health by developing individualized treatment plans, that way you can enjoy your natural teeth for the rest of your life!
