You’re close to getting or already wearing your clear aligners. Whatever the case is, you’re on your way to getting the perfectly straight smile you’ve always wanted! However, many people sometimes experience difficulties taking their trays off. Read on to learn five simple steps to make removing clear aligners a much easier process!

Step #1: Stay Calm

Often times the first step in a challenging situation is to relax. This is because the feeling of panic typically causes a task to be more difficult that it needs to be, which can make your aligners tougher to remove. By remaining calm and taking a deep breath, you can allow yourself the time and patience it takes until you successfully get them off.

Step #2: Warm Your Mouth

Having a cold drink before removing your aligners can actually make it trickier! To ensure the trays are flexible enough to manage, you can try warming your mouth by either leaving it open or drinking lukewarm water. Avoid drinking hot liquids, however, as this can cause the aligners to warp and become damaged. It can also help if your fingers and mouth are dry.

Step #3: Begin at the Back

You’ll want to first lift the aligners off your molars, gradually shifting towards the front. Some people even work on one side before lifting the other—whichever method is easiest for you. Having attachments present can make removal slightly challenging, but you’ll just need to hook your fingernails under the edge of your trays and lift.

Step #4: Try an Aligner Hook

There are convenient orthodontic tools you can buy online, like Pul Tools and OrthoKeys. These are designed for removing clear aligners by hooking under it and raising it off your teeth. They’re also incredibly useful if you have attachments.

Step #5: Switch Aligners at Night

Since you’ll have to take your trays off more often during the day due to meals, it’s best to switch to your new set in the evening. This is because you’ll both sleep through the part where it’s most uncomfortable and your teeth will have been corrected by the time you wake up, making them much easier to take off.

With these few tips—along with some mild pain relievers—you can be sure to experience a smoother process of removing and caring for your clear aligners. And if you still find difficulties along the way, you can always speak with your dentist for advice!
