After you finish eating, are you the type to look for a toothpick? This tool can help get rid of any food debris that’s stuck between your teeth, but using it can harm your smile. This habit isn’t as innocent as it may seem, but you might wonder how it can increase your risk of a dental emergency. Here’s what you should know about it and other alternatives that are much safer to use.
How Are Toothpicks Harmful?
Toothpicks are oftentimes made of bamboo or wood. These materials are strong, but they are abrasive against enamel. They can wear down this layer of your teeth the more you poke and prod. Over time, this can turn into sensitivity or increase your risk of cavities, as bacteria in your mouth can attack your teeth since they have been weakened just a bit.
Your gums can also become injured if you’re too rough. You may end up bleeding or with irritation if you’re too aggressive. However, the pointed end can also break off and splinter into the soft tissues. If you don’t take it out, then it can get lodged further in and cause an infection. So, this habit can harm your oral health if you aren’t careful.
What Should You Use Other Than Toothpicks?
If you only use toothpicks on the rare occasion, then you likely have nothing to worry about. Once or twice generally doesn’t cause noticeable harm, but it’s still best to avoid them entirely. The good news is there are plenty of other effective alternatives to remove debris between your teeth that are much safer. Here are a few you should know:
- Dental floss is designed to get into these tight spaces, so it’s great for removing any food particles and plaque. If you have trouble getting anything out, you can tie a knot in the thread to knock it out of place. Or you can get floss sticks as a more convenient option.
- Interdental brushes are also meant to get between your teeth. These tools are also small, so you can keep them in your pocket easily.
- A water flosser is great to have at home. While it’s not as portable as the ones above, this device shoots out a stream of water that can effectively remove debris. Many people also say it’s easier to hold and use!
Although you may use toothpicks, remember the reasons they can be trouble for your oral health. That way, you can reach for safer alternatives that protect your smile in the long run.
