Can I Get Invisalign If I’ve Already Had Braces or Dental Work?

Set of Invisalign aligners from Orange Park dentistInvisalign is the most advanced, comfortable, and convenient way to get the straighter smile you’ve always wanted. However, are you still a good candidate for these clear aligners if you’ve had traditional metal braces in the past? Will they still be effective if you have dental implants, porcelain veneers, or crowns? Is it worth undergoing orthodontic treatment again? Read on as your Orange Park dentist breaks down these questions and reveals if Invisalign can correct your smile if you’ve had dental treatments in the past.

Can I Get Invisalign If I’ve Had Metal Braces Before?

Unfortunately, it’s all too common for teeth to slowly shift out of alignment years after wearing metal braces, especially if the patient neglects wearing their retainer. Thankfully, you don’t have to undergo another round of arduous traditional braces to regain your smile. Invisalign clear aligners are designed to be able to correct nearly any teeth-straightening issues, even if you’ve had orthodontic treatment in the past. In fact, many people who formerly had metal braces choose Invisalign treatment to regain their results comfortably and discreetly.

Can I Get Invisalign If I Have Dental Restorations?

Has your smile changed a bit since your last orthodontic treatment? Thankfully, having dental restorations does not automatically disqualify you from Invisalign. However, it may impact the effectiveness of your treatment. Here’s what you can expect if you have:

  • Dental crowns: Invisalign aligners are custom-made to fit snugly over all your teeth, including those with dental crowns. This restoration won’t hinder your treatment at all.
  • Porcelain veneers: Teeth with securely attached veneers can typically be adjusted with Invisalign. Your dentist will closely inspect the strength and health of your veneers before beginning your treatment.
  • Dental implants: A dental implant is permanently fused into your jawbone and cannot be moved by Invisalign or traditional braces. However, Invisalign can be customized to take this into account and straighten the teeth around it. If you have many dental implants, Invisalign may not be the right choice for you.

Why Should I Restraighten My Smile with Invisalign?

Many people don’t have fond memories of wearing bulky, painful, and awkward metal braces, so you may be hesitant to undergo orthodontic treatment again. However, many patients report that the Invisalign experience is much different than traditional braces. If you choose to regain your straighter, healthier smile with Invisalign, you can enjoy:

  • Discrete process: Instead of a mouthful of metal, you can proudly show off your smile as it’s being straightened since clear aligners are nearly invisible.
  • Comfortable experience: With no abrasive metal wires or brackets to irritate your soft tissues, Invisalign straightens teeth more comfortably than traditional methods.
  • Shorter treatment: While permanently fixed braces are usually worn for at least two years, Invisalign treatment typically only takes between 10 to 18 months.

Whether you’re regaining your straightened smile or undergoing orthodontic treatment for the first time, Invisalign is an excellent choice. Talk to your Orange Park dentist to day to discover if these clear aligners are right for you!
