You’ve wanted to straighten your teeth for a long time. You’re tired of feeling self-conscious about how your smile looks and are finally thinking seriously about your options to correct your crooked teeth. You know that traditional braces can get the job done, but what about more modern treatment methods like Invisalign? What are the pros and cons of each of these options? How can you figure out which one is the best solution for you? Well, keep reading this informative post from your dentist in Orange Park to help you answer these questions.

Traditional Braces

For many years, traditional braces have proven to straighten teeth effectively. And advancements in materials mean that braces are more subtle and comfortable than ever before. Your dentist affixes metal brackets to your teeth and connects these brackets with a wire that is secured in place with rubber bands. Tension in the wire is used to apply pressure to your teeth and move them into the desired position. They provide a durable, reliable way to overcome misalignment.

Advantages of Traditional Braces

In addition to their track record of successfully straightening teeth, traditional braces have several benefits, including the following:

  • Traditional braces can help patients with severe misalignment issues.
  • You can have fun personalizing your treatment through choosing the color(s) of the rubber bands.
  • Typically, traditional braces are more affordable than other straightening treatments.

Disadvantages of Traditional Braces

Even with their advantages, traditional braces do have some downsides, including these:

  • The abrasive brackets can dig into or cut your lips or cheeks.
  • Traditional braces are an obvious treatment method and can be distracting in appearance.
  • Caring for your oral health is more difficult with traditional braces.
  • Treatment can last up to 3 years with traditional braces.
  • There are some foods that you shouldn’t eat with braces.

Invisalign

Although newer than traditional braces, Invisalign is no less effective at straightening teeth. Instead of metal brackets and wires, Invisalign uses clear plastic alignment trays that gently guide your teeth into position progressively. You simply switch out your trays every few weeks, bringing you one step closer to the perfectly straight smile you’ve always wanted.

Advantages of Invisalign

Invisalign addresses many of the problems with traditional braces and has many benefits, including:

  • Fast treatment that typically lasts no longer than 18 months.
  • Fewer adjustment appointments in the dentist’s office.
  • Better appearance throughout treatment.
  • Easier oral care.
  • No food restrictions.

Disadvantages of Invisalign

Although Invisalign has many benefits, it isn’t perfect and has some disadvantages, such as the following:

  • The trays can potentially get lost or damaged, prolonging treatment.
  • For best results, you need to follow instructions, such as wearing the trays for 20 to 22 hours every day. If you don’t, your treatment could be delayed.
  • Invisalign typically costs more than braces.

As you weigh your options, keep in mind that you don’t have to make this choice on your own. During your consultation, your dentist can provide advice and insight for your specific case, helping you have more confidence moving forward with whichever treatment you pick. Regardless of whether you choose Invisalign or traditional braces, you can enjoy all the benefits of having straight teeth and finally have the confidence to let your smile show!
