Are you missing multiple teeth in your mouth? It’s important to choose a tooth replacement option to prevent yourself from developing additional oral health issues. However, this is a big decision, so it pays to be well informed. Continue reading to learn more about dental bridges and partial dentures and their benefits. This way, you can best the best decision to meet your needs.

How Do Dental Bridges Work?

A dental bridge is comprised of two dental crowns and a number of replacement teeth, called pontics. These are customized to fill in a gap left behind by one or more missing teeth in a row. In some cases, dental implants can be used in the place of dental crowns. This restoration is bonded securely in place.

What Are Partial Dentures?

Partial dentures are made of multiple replacement teeth set in a gum-colored acrylic place. This is held in place with metal clips and fits between your healthy teeth like a puzzle piece. Just like full dentures, they can be removed to be cleaned and then reinserted. They are a popular solution that is both convenient and cost-effective.

When Are Dental Bridges the Best Option?

Dental bridges rely on the healthy teeth or dental implants to keep your replacement teeth in place, so if the teeth that are surrounding the gaps are damaged or decayed, a dental bridge may not be the best solution for you. If you have gum disease, this will need to be treated before you can have a dental bridge placed. A dental bridge is likely the best option when you are missing one or a couple of consecutive teeth with healthy teeth on either side of the gap.

When Are Partial Dentures the Best Option?

Partial dentures don’t require the altering of the surrounding teeth, making this an appealing option for many patients. The metal clips can hold onto your existing teeth regardless of their condition. If you aren’t quite sure about having replacement teeth bonded in place, or you are missing multiple teeth in different areas of an arch, a partial denture may be the solution for you. Partial dentures don’t last quite as long as dental bridges because they aren’t as durable, so they may need to be repaired and replaced more often. You can remove your partial denture to clean it and give your mouth a break.
