You Should Know Your Dentist Isn’t Judging You

A dentist waiting for his patient to come in

There are many reasons people put off their dental treatment for months, even years. Visiting the dentist can sometimes evoke feelings of anxiety or self-consciousness, but it’s essential to understand that your dentist is not here to judge you for what you may perceive as the worst set of pearly whites on the planet.

Dentists are compassionate people with a desire to see your pain alleviated and your smile restored. They are advocates and partners in your oral health journey, not adversaries. Read on to learn why you should go to the dentist even if your teeth aren’t looking their best.

Your Dentist Has Seen It All Before

When you look in the mirror and see a crooked tooth, severe decay, or a broken filling in your mouth, you may think to yourself, “My dentist is going to freak out when they see this.” The truth is dentists look at teeth all day, every day. Nothing fazes them when it comes to oral health.

If that were true, they would have most likely never graduated dental school in the first place. Your dentist had to watch and treat plenty of cases while learning that would probably make your stomach turn, but they chose to continue.

Your Teeth Are Not Equivalent to Your Morality

Not everyone was blessed with perfect genetics or infinite money to help fix all their dental problems. There are plenty of reasons your teeth may be in the state they are today, but none of those reasons have to do with whether or not you’re a good person.

Some people feel like their character is being judged because they have bad teeth. This is not the case. Your dentist doesn’t see a bad person when they see your teeth; they see someone who needs help, and they are dedicated to helping you restore your smile.

Your Health Could Be Affected

If the above wasn’t enough to dispel the misconceptions you may have about going to the dentist, then you should know that untreated problems won’t go away on their own. Your oral health and the health of the rest of your body are one and the same.

If your teeth are in a state of brokenness or decay, you could risk serious infection or injury by prolonging your treatment. Your dentist wants you to come in to take care of your health. They didn’t choose this profession to make fun of their patients; they did so because they have a desire to see healthy smiles and healthy people.

Your dentist isn’t here to judge you; they’re here to see you succeed and live a better life free of pain and anxiety. They truly understand what it is like to be in your position, and they want to help. You should never feel embarrassed during your dental visits. Embrace the opportunity to collaborate with your dental care team and enjoy your smile.
