4 Common Summer Enjoyments That Can Damage Your Smile

The days are getting longer, and the weather is getting hotter. This means summer is right around the corner! It will soon be time to partake in common summer activities and fun that happen every year. However, some of these enjoyments can lead to problems with your oral health. Read on to learn about four ways they can damage your smile and how to protect your teeth and gums during the warmer months.

#1. Chilly Treats

Is there anything that signifies summertime more than popsicles, slushies, or ice cream? These treats are not only delicious but cool you down as you have fun in the sun. However, your teeth can pay the price for eating these chilly goodies. They may cause increased tooth sensitivity. If your pearly whites are experiencing discomfort while eating cold food, it could be a sign of a cavity. It can also indicate your tooth is slightly cracked, exposing the tooth roots. If you keep experiencing tooth sensitivity regularly, be sure to visit your dentist so they can figure out the underlying reason. Also, be sure to use a soft-bristled toothbrush and avoid abrasive, whitening toothpastes.

#2. Cold Refreshments

You naturally consume more cold beverages during the hotter months. While it’s best to reach for water to stay hydrated, it can be easier to reach for less healthy options due to all the activities during the summer. From family barbeques to fun vacations, you may be tempted to reach for more sugary options like soda, sweet tea, and lemonade. Frozen alcoholic drinks like pina coladas also have a high sugar content. Be aware of how much you are consuming and choose water as much as you can. Additionally, rinse your mouth out after enjoying your cold refreshment so the remaining sugar and bad bacteria won’t sit on your teeth all throughout your day.

#3. Outdoor Sports

Summer is a great season due to the fact it gets you outside and active! Group sports like beach volleyball and baseball are a wonderful way to enjoy your loved ones and the sunshine. However, it does increase the risk of experiencing a dental injury.  To keep your smile safe, you can always wear a custom mouthguard from your dentist. They will help protect your pearly whites while you challenge your friends and family to another game of fun!

#4. Swimming

There’s nothing more refreshing than jumping into a pool on a sunny day. Unfortunately, if the pool’s pH balance is off, it can cause damage to your tooth enamel. Be sure to keep your mouth closed as much as possible and if you own a pool, be sure to check that its pH levels are between 7.2 and 7.8. Then you can safely dive in while keeping your mouth in good condition.
